What happens to our feline friends in the event of our death

Cat Trust Fund

Several week ago I received a telephone call from one of my neighbors about helping him find homes for two adult cats because their owner was going to a rest home and could no longer take care of her feline friends. In my research I found out that each year two million to four million pets are euthanized, some because they lost their home when their guardian died. Our pets are an extremely important part of our lives. It’s critical that our pets will be well cared for as would for our family and children.

As many as 25 percent of families with a pet have provided for their animals through wills or trusts, said Sara Amundson, executive director with the Humane Society Legislative Fund. “People really consider pets as members of their family,” she said.

Our pets are an extremely important part of our lives. It’s critical that our pets will be well cared for. [Our] children are all self-sufficient adults who will be provided for in other ways.

It’s important to plan ahead for the health of your pet. We suggested providing for conditions at least six months in the future.  This is like a babysitter’s note, you plot every detail in it and you leave instructions as to how you want things done.

Pet trusts enable owners to leave money earmarked for the care of their animals, and specify how they want pets to be treated.

It is very important to pick the right person and hope that when the time comes that they’ll have enough integrity to follow your wishes leaving money in a trust fund to provide their care until they also  pass on.

If you can not fine someone in the family or among your friends there are also  organizations that care for pets after the owner has passed away like the California Cat Center’s LifeCare program. You will need to do research in your area to find an organization designed like the California Cat Center Life Care program.

I now realize to start now to provide for my 7 cats care when ever I leave this earthly place. You should also think about the cat care options available to you and rewrite your will to take care of this future problem.
