Travel with cats does not have to be a disaster. Cats travel by car well if conditioned to it in advance of long trips. The following Travel tips will make travel easier on you and your cat, and will guarantee future invitations for you and your cat to visit again.

Make sure your cat will be welcome everywhere you plan to stop. Many hotels and motels allow pets, so do your homework first, and find out the rules, before planning your itinerary.

Be sure that you have provided at least one bowl of water for your cat to drink and a litter box.

You don’t want to expose your cat to any more risks than necessary, so make sure his shots are current before travelling. It would be also be a good time to ask your veterinarian if she recommends a mild tranquilizer if your cat is particularly nervous about travelling. Be sure to bring a health certificate and proof of vaccination with you — you may need both when travelling through some states.

A 500 mile or more trip is not the occasion to test your cat’s travel ability. Accustom her to her carrier by letting her sleep in it, then take her on increasingly longer local drives well in advance of your trip. Make travel a fun occasion, with plenty of rewards, and your cat will soon be a seasoned veteran at travel.

Equip your cat with identification. Invest in a good harness with securely attached ID tags. Include your name, address, phone number, as well as contact info for your vet. Leave your itinerary with your veterinarian in case they should receive a call that your cat has been found. Tattooing and micro-chipping are a plus. With his harness and a leash, you can take your cat out to stretch his legs on rest stops.

Use an approved cat carrier. Cats should never be allowed to wander freely inside an automobile. Frightened cats invariably head straight for the foot pedals. Kitty will be much more comfortable in her own carrier, with a blanket and toy inside. Try a sturdy metal crate with a solid bottom.

Bon voyage!

When I take my cat for a ride in the car he simply hates the car by all the noise, the movement and the confusion surrounding the ride is simply too much. Many cats spend the entire ride howling to escape. The video describes how your cat can be when riding town. This can also be quite unpleasant to the owner.

The cat carrier is the most logical solution to taking your cat to the vet or just around town when you visit your friends. The cat will feel safer in a carrier, as it will feel like a little shelter to him. Maybe put something that smells like home in the carrier with him. Try covering the carrier. With the scent of home in his little shelter and a cover blocking out the world, he might forget he’s in a car.

Or if you like your cat to roam the car with you start by acclimating your cat to the car prior to the needed ride. Put him in the car, give him food and treats then bring him back inside. Once he adjusts to this, then try doing it again this time also start the engine, if needed follow this with a short ride. Some of the anxiety is likely to dissipate as your cat realizes that he is safe and secure in the car.

It is time to go to the vet, and suddenly Jessie Jane is nowhere in sight. You just brought the carrier out of the closet, and thought you saw Jessie dive under the bed, so you peer underneath the bed and there she is hunched in the farthest corner hissing at you. Try as you might, you can’t get her out, so with a red-face you call your vet make your apologies and reschedule the appointment. Now what do you do?

You return to basics and in doing so, you will allow your cat to become desensitized to the perceived threat of the cat carrier. The idea is to reassure your cat that every time she goes into the carrier, bad things will not occur. You can achieve this in several ways and by making this carrier a part of your cat’s daily routine, as well as using it during the all-important trip to the vet you minimize your cat’s stress in dealing with it. We found the Sherpa Cat Carrier as one of the top of the line cat carriers.

Keeping the carrier visible in your home at all times helps to acclimate the cat to its presence. The first steps in getting your cat used to the carrier begin long before the trip to the vet. You need to familiarize your cat with the carrier slowly and gradually.First off, before you even begin, wash the carrier out well with hot water and vinegar. Let it air dry for at least 24 hours.

Bring the carrier inside, and start feeding your cat inside of the carrier. Leave the door propped open, and place a bowl of tasty canned food at the very back. If the cat doesn’t go in on her own free will, don’t force her to. Simply leave the food in place for 10-15 minutes, then remove it and store it so it won’t spoil. Try again later. Do not feed her in-between times anywhere but in the carrier.

Sprinkle catnip on the bottom of the carrier, and toss a few toys inside. Ping pong balls or golf balls work well. They make a wonderful sound when batted about the floor of the carrier.

Spray the inside of the carrier with Spray, saturate it well, put some nice padding inside to make a comfy bed, and see if kitty will go in and curl up. You can either leave the door propped open, or take it off completely.

Once the cat is comfortable about going inside the carrier, close the door for about 5 minutes, than release your cat. Give kitty a nice treat like Kitty Kaviar or kippered herring.

Do this about twice a week. Increase her time of confinement, but never more than 10 minutes.

Now you are ready to go to the vet without fear of your cat running and hiding under the bed.

The last time I went to the clinic this way my cat jumped out the window when I pulled to take him into the Vet. I took me about an hour to catch him and I decided never to do this again.

I have seen many people even use their purses, overnight bag, jogging bag and even just plain old boxes. Just as amazing to me are to see people use these inappropriate carrying paraphernalia to take the cats around town.

Since my accident loosing my cat for a hour, I went on-line a purchase the Sherpa Cat Carrier. Now my cat Jazz is very comfortable and makes things much easier for me. I later found out that the cat carrier could be used on Airline for in cabin travel. Your carrier just fits under the seat in front of you and now your cat can travel with you every where in this little world. Thanks to Sherpa for making a world wide travel kit my cat.

Before I started using my new cat carrier, l left Jazz cat to lounge in the carrier so he could get to know the new space. Remember this is a moving environment and should be a pleasant experience for you and your cat. I put some of his favorite treats and toys in the bag and slowly move him around in the new carrier until he felt comfortable. Now he travels everywhere in comfort.

When you’re taking your cat and their canine friend on the road a pet carrier is very comfortable for him and makes things much easier for you. Some have better security features and some are more durable than others. A good pet carrier should consist primarily of light materials.

Before using your new cat carrier, let your pet get to know its new space. This is a moving environment and should be a pleasant experience for you and your cat. Put some favorite treats or toys in the bag and slowly move your cat around your home until it feels comfortable.

If you are traveling by plane, ask about special regulations regarding pets in-cabin when making a reservation. A current health certificate (within 7 to 10 days), including inoculations, is essential. To prevent airsickness, no food should be offered within 6 hours of departure, no water within 2 hours of flight time. Your pet should remain in the carrier from the time you enter the terminal until you exit the destination terminal.

Traveling in a car, position the tote in the center of the back seat with the safety belt through the shoulder straps. Make sure your cat’s vaccines are up to date and bring those records with you in the event logging requires proof. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and food, along with a leash or harness, toys and bedding.

Visit our travel links section for information of Pet Friendly Hotels, Airline Information & Regulations, Important Airline Notes and Approved Airlines Information

When welcome a new kitten into your home, it’s important to have all the necessary supplies at the ready. This means more than having food and a cat box of course, though those supplies are the first to think about. You also want to ensure that you have a cat collar, a scratching post, a cat tree (or somewhere for the kitten to sleep), a brush, and of course an assortment of cat toys. These cat supplies are all essential in their own right. The purpose of the collar should be obvious, and it’s good to have kittens accustomed to wearing a collar while they’re young. The scratching post is so that they don’t target your furniture instead! Cat trees can also often serve as scratching posts, but it’s kittens need to learn to climb and also have somewhere to retreat if they feel threatened. Make sure you start brushing your kitten while they’re young, otherwise they won’t like it when they’re older. The cat toys are of course to build a rapport between owner and kitten.

Having these supplies on hand when you’re welcoming your kitten into your home is a great idea. It’s important that kittens get accustomed to all of these supplies while they’re young, otherwise they might become unruly with age!
