Bringing home your new kitten with your family will be exciting and fun. Their sweet face, beautiful eyes and soft fur will really gain a special place in your family’s hearts. If this is your first cat you will need cat toys, food (both dry and wet) and especially a new cat litter box. After introducing you new cat to your home, the first thing you need to consider is training your new found friend their cat litter box.

First: Place your kitten in the litter box about a half an hour after playing with him or after he has eaten dinner. This helps your cat become familiar to understand where he needs to potty.

Second: Occasionally stir the litter to arouse his interest. By nature, cats are curious and will arouse his interest in the litter box.

Third: Play with your kitten to encourage him to jump in and out of the box on his own. This will surely be a sign he is getting used to the litter box.

There are a large variety of cat litter boxes available, from just a litter pan to decor litter box furniture. Cat Palace USA has a large selection you may want to review when you get a chance. Enjoy your new found kitten!

Ed Lowe was born July 10, 1920 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Lulu and Henry E. Lowe. His family later moved near Cassopolis, Michigan, where Ed spent his youth before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945.After his Navy duty, Ed joined his father’s company in Cassopolis, which sold industrial absorbents, including sawdust and an absorbent clay called Fuller’s Earth. One day in 1947, Ed was approached by a neighbor who was tired of using ashes in her cat’s box and dealing with sooty paw prints.

She asked for some sand, and Ed suggested clay instead. Soon the neighbor would use nothing else, noting that the clay was much more absorbent than sand and didn’t track all over the house. Ed had a hunch that other cat owners would love his new cat box filler, too, so he filled 10 brown bags with clay, wrote the name “Kitty Litter” on them, and called on the local pet store. With sand available for next-to-nothing, the shop owner doubted anyone would pay 65 cents for a five-pound bag of Kitty Litter Brand. “So give it away,” Ed told him. Soon customers were asking for more–and were quite willing to pay for it. The rest, as they say, is history.

In 1990, prior to the divestiture of its clay mining and consumer product businesses, Edward Lowe Industries, Inc. was the nation’s largest producer of cat box filler with retail sales of more than $210 million annually. His product, once sold in simple brown paper bags, had improved too–thanks to Ed’s innovative approach to business. Kitty Litter Brand, which was 99 percent dust free.

Once we had kitty litter available, people started putting the litter in cat litter boxes all around the house. Then companies started to develop automatic litter boxes for self cleaning and then came all the litter box covers for the cats privicy. Who knew? I always thought it was invented by the Ancient Egyptians to be used in their palaces.

My cat JJ had a urinary track infection which required surgery to eliminate the problem. However after some time I found JJ was not using the litter box but doing his business right next to the box. I spent many hours trying to figure out how to retrain him to use the appropriate cat litter boxes. Because I have 7 cats I found out the following remedies to reintroduce JJ to using the littler box instead of the floor. Here is what I found out and want to share with all you cat lovers who might have the same problem.

Like I indicated above it may be a medical problem, including diabetes, cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), bladder infections & bladder stones. You should have your cat examined by a veterinarian for any of these problems.

A sexually male or female that has begun to spray should be neutered immediately. Spraying is urine marking in the standing position. Cats that have been spraying for only a short period of time are more likely to return to normal than cats that have been spraying for a long period of time. The sooner these animals are neutered, the less likely they are to continue spraying urine which marks their territory.

One of the major thing to consider is the poor choice of litter. Some cats don’t like certain textures or oder and will become very picky about their litter. You need to notice when your cat stopped using the box when you have changed to a different kind of litter.

If you have multiple cats you will need multiple boxes in different areas of the house. Dominate cats can intimidate your other cats in the house from using the litter box.

Cats are creatures of habit. Often, if their routine is disturbed, they urinate in inappropriate locations. Changing the location of food, water, and bed can cause urine marking. Changing the location of familiar objects should be done gradually in order to avoid anxiety attacks. Each day, the box should be moved only a few inches. If the box is moved too quickly, the cat may urinate in the original location.

You should clean the litter boxes at least once a day, but I prefer twice daily because of my multiple cats. I also prefer clumping litter and filling the box almost up to the top. Cats like to bury their waste, thus eliminating odors after using the box.

So if your having problems, I recommend you investigate the above solutions so you and your cat can become happy friends.

If there are children in the home let them participate on how to care for their new companion. Read up as much as possible on how to care for your new cat. You can find lots of articles on the internet for any specific question you may have about your cat care.

If you have gotten your cat from a pet store, veterinarian or friend make sure you ask them their feeding schedule and type of food. Once your new kitty has settled in the new home, gradually mix in the new food you’ll be using because cats generally don’t like changes in their diet.

Make sure your cat has food and water every morning before you go to work. Second: Purchase a litter box that will service the number of cats in the family. Sometimes with multiple cat family will will require several litter boxes in different areas of your home. Make sure they are cleaned every day, otherwise your cat may find a better place on the floor to take care of their business. And finally: make sure they stay healthy with a yearly check up with you vetinarian. Make sure you always have the appropriate cat supplies available in the home like kitty litter, treats, and cat food. Many times I had to get up in the moring and run to the store for cat food because all my cats were just sitting at the food bowl looking up at me. “Were’s breakfast Dad”.

When I brought her home she settle down in my master bedroom and has never left these past two years. There was a community litter box shared by all my cats which she used at first, but then reverted to taking care of her business on the floor next to the bed. To solve this problem I purchased a small litter box just for her use, which eventually solved the problem. After a while the placement of the litter box became annoying next to the bed, so I purchased a cool litter box cover night stand to put next to the bed. This solved two problems: the litter box placement and having a night stand next to the bed to place my lamp for reading. She now continues to use to the new cat litter box cover night stand and no more probles with mistakes on the carpet. Just remember some times you need to make adjustments to you life styles to make your cat comfortable and happy campers.

JJ, who had been sitting in the Habikat Cat Patio watching the leaves falling in the yard said, “Well, I
haven’t been keeping a record of it but they both spend some time getting it cleaned up and in order.
Why do you ask?”

Joey nodded and then went on, “Auzzie said that it is going to be a hard winter after this drought we’ve
had and he thinks we might be spending more time indoors this winter. I know that I hate going out in
the cold.”

JJ replied, “What’s your point? How does one affect the other?”

Joey stretched and went on, “The other day when we were over at Maggie’s house for her birthday party
I noticed that she had a LitterMaid litter box near the backdoor. When I mentioned it to her she said that
her folks had found that it was the best way to keep the area neat and clean. I thought that with
Christmas coming on we might get one for Mom and Dad, to make their lives a little easier.”

“Have you asked Auzzie what he thinks?” JJ asked.

Joey replied, “He seems to know a lot about the different models of cat litter boxes there are. He said theyare easy to use and the are self-cleaning, too! The specially designed receptacles make the cleaning job
a snap.”
