In the Middle Ages it was a common belief that witches could shape shift into a cat. Today there are many “black cat” superstitions such as a cat walking under a ladder. However, most people take these thoughts as silly.  Black cats are loved just as any other cats. 

Many families like to dress up the Cats this time of the year.  However, do our cats really enjoy wearing a Halloween costume? I don’t think so. Most cats don’t like to be dressed up. In fact, I think Halloween is the least favorite holidays for most cats.  The loud noises, screaming kids coming in and out the front door, scary costumes and constant opening the front door completely frighten our poor little feline friends.  On this Halloween eve, I recommend you keep your cat in one room during the trick-or-treat festivities. If you have an outdoor cat, bring he in for the evening. Don’t force your cat to dress up in a costume they don’t want to wear.  Keep your cat away from candy because it could make them sick.  And, finally give your Cat his favorite Halloween treat  catnip.

All cats respond differently to catnip. Some of them walk away cuz they couldn’t care less, but others go ape. The cats that do go crazy are responding to the active ingredient in catnip called Nepetalactone. The reaction to this chemical is caused by the organ that operates a cat’s five senses (touch, smell, sight, sound and taste.)

Those cats that do react will eat it or lick it; some roll in it and others just sniff it. The catnip reaction is inherited so not all of them respond. If your cat’s behavior doesn’t change around catnip it’s nothing to worry about.

Now that we understand and appreciate Mom’s day lets compare why Babies and Cats are like each other in many ways.

Babies sleep all night and play all day while Cats prowl all night and sleep all day

Babies and Cats play with lots of toys

Babies and Cats crawl around the floor looking to put something in their mouth

It seems like if humans don’t have water or a coffee drink in their hand, they have an energy drink.  Turns out there is an energy drink for cats, too—catnip tea!  Brew a cup and let them go.  Mine roll around a lot and fall off things, but they seem to enjoy themselves, and catnip is a natural remedy to aid their digestion as well as a favorite treat.
