Cats that scratch seldom break the habit.  It’s a natural instinct for cats to sharpen their claws, and cats that don’t do it on scratching posts often turn to the furniture.  Instead of having a cat declawed, which is inhumane, it’s a better idea to install indoor cat fences around those locations where you don’t want your cat to scratch.  Providing your cat with a simple collar and installing an indoor fence will keep them away from the furniture they often scratch.  Cats are animals of habit; they will often find one object to scratch and want to stick with it, so warding off that object alone can break their scratching habit.
